Knowing Which Motivation Theories to Use

Motivation can be defined as a defining force that is within us that moves us in a direction or towards something that we want to obtain. There is various motivation theories that we can use that will allow us to deal with the particular goals that we set for ourselves.

These motivation theories explain why we become motivated and how we use this motivation to change or modify our behavior.

There are two main types of motivation theories that we should consider when looking for inspiration. There are content theories and process theories. Although neither is universally accepted, both act as a guide when looking into what our body and brain needs and wants when it comes to inspiration and encouragement.

Content motivation theories are based on motivation that is found from within you. It is these internal factors that energize us as well as direct our behavior. Maslow came up with this theory to identify five levels of needs which is considered to be a hierarchy with the most basic of needs coming first and the most detailed need coming last. This is the most used of the motivation theories and one that usually works best for everyone. These five needs that he mentioned are psychological, the need for love, the need for self esteem, safety and security needs, as well as the need for self actualization.

The process theories which are another in a long line of motivation theories talks about how thoughts are used to influence your behavior. Included in this are Adam’s equity theory and the Vroom expectance theory. Both should be studied among the various types of process theories. They are both goal setting motivation theories that work with setting small and large goals, and rewarding yourself once you reach these particular goals.

Whichever motivation theories you believe in it is important to know that you should subscribe to at least one of the motivation theories when looking to change your behavior. It is very difficult when setting goals for yourself or looking inside of yourself for motivation to actually find it if you do not know where to begin. By studying the motivation theories that you can use in your life, you are more apt to be able to do something about what you want changed. Whether you are looking to change your personal life or professional life, you need something that will fill you enthusiasm or inspire to make that change. So, take the time to learn and absorb these motivational theories.
