Motivation Methods For The Average Joe

The concept of motivation has been studied in psychology and human development for many years, and many different theories have been developed about it. The truth is different people are motivated by different things—but motivation is a necessity in life, especially in the business and educational world.

Whether you're looking to motivate your employees, your students, or yourself, knowing about the different motivation methods can be a great way to get started.

An Outside Job

One method of motivation is to provide extrinsic rewards to those who you are trying to motivate. Extrinsic rewards are outside incentives, or tangible objects that serve as a driving force behind the completion of a task. Money is an extrinsic reward, as is praise from another person. Grades in school are also an example of extrinsic motivation. People who need extrinsic rewards usually have more trouble motivating themselves.

From Deep Within

Intrinsic motivation is the opposite of extrinsic rewards—it is internal for each individual. Intrinsic motivation usually consists of a feeling of satisfaction or accomplishment at knowing that you completed a difficult task or have succeeded in some way. Intrinsic motivation is not a reward—because rewards are external factors only. Those who are intrinsically motivated are often thought of as being self-motivated.

It is unknown why some people are more intrinsically motivated than others. However, there are some theories on the subject. Experts suggest that people who are intrinsically motivated feel that their educational results are obtained through methods they themselves can control, such as the amount of effort. Such people also believe that they play an active role in their own lives by working to reach a goal. Finally, someone who is intrinsically motivated are driven by knowledge, not the grade that memorization will get them.

External Inspiration

Many people are motivated neither self motivated nor affected by extrinsic rewards. Some people find themselves motivated by other people around them. Quotes and sayings often serve as inspiration for people who are trying to accomplish a difficult task. The fact that a loved one or someone you know has made an accomplishment could serve as motivation for you to accomplish the same thing. Though these factors are external, they are not a reward in any way.

Making The Difference

Once you determine what motivates you as an individual, that is often all it takes to make the difference in your life. Finding your motivation factor is like finding a key that unlocks the door to eternal achievement.
