Chicago and the Great Song - You’re The Inspiration

“You’re the inspiration” is a very popular song from the music group Chicago. What started out as just a song, has turned into some people’s mantra for living life.

The song debuted in 1984 and was an instant hit. It started out as number three on the music charts and helped to sell what was one of Chicago’s most popular albums. So, do we know what really made “You’re the Inspiration” a hit for all of the many people who listened to it?

Besides the wonderful lyrics and the catchy melody, it was the fact that people recognized the song as being one of greatness. During so much of the late 70’s and early 80’s there had been an influx of heavy metal bands and what some would be considered to be “loud” music. When “You’re the Inspiration” hit the airwaves people were immediately taken back to a time when music meant something. It was almost reminiscent of the 1950’s when music was predominately soft rock, and made you feel as if you wanted to hug someone and tell them how you feel about them. It is this type of music that people longed for but hadn’t heard in so long.

“You’re the Inspiration” started a trend of bringing soft rock back into the lives of so many people that were craving these types of songs. Chicago, at the time, was considered to be more of a mature group, catering to people that are older than the typical teenagers that most groups were singing for. By targeting an older demographic Chicago was able to bring music back into the lives of people that simply didn’t like the harder rock that was being played. It also brought more groups like Chicago to the airwaves because people enjoyed this music so much.

Even today you can hear “You’re the Inspiration” on almost any easy listening station you turn on. People are still requesting it on the radio, and people still flock to see Chicago in concert just based on this song. It will always remain a perennial favorite to people who had given up on music. With an amazing amount of songs that Chicago has performed, there is nothing quite like the song that surprised the nation in 1984. “You’re the Inspiration” will always be a hit and attract a new audience every time it is played. Listen to the words and you will know why it is so great.
