Helping Children to Develop the Motivation for Learning

The earlier you instill the motivation for learning into a child, the more successful they will be throughout their lifetime. It is this motivation that they will carry with them through all that they accomplish such as school, a personal life, and even their career as they get older.

There are many ways to instill this motivation through learning; you just have to figure out what is best for your child.

Instilling the motivation for learning begins with reading. It is one of the most important and necessary skills that they will ever learn. When you are reading to your child, it is showing them that reading is important to you as well. This can be a great motivator for children, since so much of their early life is spent with them trying to emulate you as a parent. Take the time to read everyday if you can, and also allow them to foster their own creativity by making up stories that they can tell you themselves. By writing down these stories and reading them back to them as they get older you are not only creating a tradition that is beautiful, but you are showing them that reading is essential and enjoyable.

Another motivation for learning that should be instilled in an early age deals with mathematics. No matter what they say, they will indeed use math everyday of their life, and need to learn it early. Also, motivation comes in things that they already know, so if they know how to add then will feel comfortable learning accounting as they get into college. You can use math to do almost anything from having them count cars to helping you figure out how much money to give to the cashier at the grocery store.

Motivation for learning also comes from spelling. Learning how to spell correctly involves enthusiasm that will take them further in their life because they feel confident in the words that they are using. Confidence is key when having the motivation for learning for almost any subject. The better that they feel about themselves and what they know, the more apt they are to want to learn more. Use spelling to foster communication when it comes to writing down grocery lists or to do lists. Start out with smaller words and then work your way up to larger words as they get older. There is nothing they can’t do if they know how to spell. Motivation for learning is a precious gift to give to your child.
